International Student Ambassador Anuja came from India to study in the UK. She shares her tips to cope with homesickness when living away from home.

Homesickness is not an uncommon feeling. Almost all of us have been through that ‘sinking feeling’ of missing home, familiar faces and places when away from home. As an international student, staying miles away from home, feeling homesick is ok sometimes, but here are my tips to focus on positively dealing with and effectively coping with homesickness.

Acknowledging changes and accepting emotions

When faced with feelings of missing familiarity, the very first step is to understand and acknowledge the emotions. It is absolutely ok and normal to miss home in a distant land, and it takes time to accommodate and learn new things. That can be overwhelming in the beginning. However, being patient and aware of the changes can lay the foundation of a positive adjustment gradually.

Making and maintaining connections

The key to overcome homesickness is maintaining an optimal and fruitful balance between maintaining old and making new bonds. Overindulging in connecting with familiar bonds may spark homesickness.

But equally, ignoring them can also be harmful. And so, striking a balance between making new friends and keeping old friends is essential.

Engaging in activities which helps in self-discovery

Positive emotions can be boosted by engaging in activities that make you feel good. It can be reading a book, volunteering in the community for a good cause or simply learning a new language!

Buy a fav snack from home/cook your fav meal!

One of the easiest ways to feel good when feeling homesick is getting a favourite snack from home, which can be readily available from an international food store.

A good meal can also bring a positive sense of belonging and remind you of home and family!

Never forget the purpose of the hour and chase your dreams

There might be days where you feel blue, tired and a deep sense of longing for home and family. But, thinking practically and remembering the purpose and broader picture of attaining your goal can make things easier.

Keeping an active routine and disciplined lifestyle embracing new roles and activities and taking regular self-care breaks to boost mental health can be highly beneficial in coping with homesickness and adjust to the situation effectively.

Remember if you are struggling with homesickness and your mental health, help is available.
